Description: Join us for a winter day hike of Mount Garfield (Elev. 4105 ft). This will be a strenuous out-and-back hike of approximately 3,000 ft elevation gain and 13 miles at a slightly faster than moderate pace for experienced winter hikers. Approximately 2.5 miles (1.25 miles one way) of the total hike distance will be a road walk to and from the trailhead. The ascent is gradual along an old fire road passing through beautiful woodlands and climbs steeply in the last ½ mile to a rocky summit with 360-degree views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, Bond Range, and Franconia Ridge. The trail has two water crossings that will either be navigated by the group or will be circumvented via walk-arounds; applicants should have prior experience with White Mountain stream crossings in potentially slippery conditions. Weather re-schedule date for the hike is Sunday November 15. The leader's midsize friendly dog may be joining the hike dependent on conditions. Winter conditions in the White Mountains can vary considerably. Participants will be expected to bring AMC's Winter Day-Hiking Equipment recommended gear and should be prepared with readily accessible food and beverages to take short breaks. Expect approximately 7.5 hours of active hiking time plus breaks. Microspikes with at least a 3/8" tooth, such as Kahtoola or Hillsound, are required. Hiking poles are recommended. Leaders will advise confirmed participants on necessity of snowshoes, but registrants should either have or have access to mountaineering-style snowshoes with built-in crampons. Registrants should expect a phone call from one of the leaders to discuss fitness and recent winter hiking experience of similar length, difficulty, and elevation gain.
